Picking the Best Chocolate Bars

When I think of the best chocolate bars a few names come to mind right away.  I would like to take a look at why those bars pop into my head and what makes them the best chocolate bars you can buy.  I am not going to talk about the best chocolate candy as that is an article for another day, but rather focus on the best chocolate bars you can get easily and affordably.

My Favorite Chocolate Bars

First up is the Snickers bar.  This bar is made by Mars, Inc. and has been around since 1930.  It was named for one of the Mars families horses and has been popular worldwide since.  It used to be known as Marathon outside the US, but that name was changed to Snickers.  Why is this one of the best chocolate bars ever made, well because it is delicious that’s why!

Peanuts, nougat, caramel all covered in milk chocolate make this bar have a little bit of everything all in perfect balance.  I love the crunchiness of the nuts mixed with the chewy caramel and nougat.  The nuts and caramel separate it from the bland and boring Three Musketeers and Milky Way.   There are certain times I crave a good chocolate bar, and only a Snickers will do.  For that it ranks high on my list of best chocolate bars.

Next up is the good old fashioned Hershey bar.  This bar is the Great American Chocolate Br and the one that all others are measured against.  The first bar was introduced in 1894 and while variations exist, when one wants a good old fashioned American chocolate bar Hershey is the one to grab.

There are a variety of sizes available with the largest being a five pound bar you can purchase from Hershey’s website.   This bar came from humble beginnings and was so successful that an entire town was built around the factory where it was produced.  There are very few things that are truly as American as a Hershey bar.

Last on the list is the Baby Ruth.  While many people assume this bar was named for the famous baseball player Babe Ruth, this is not the case.  According to the company the bar was named for the president’s daughter, Ruth Cleveland.  Many felt that this was a little suspect considering the popularity of Babe Ruth at the time the bar came out, and the fact that Ruth had been dead for 17 years when the bar was released.

Ironically the Curtiss Candy Company successfully shut down a rival bar that was named for Babe Ruth on the grounds that the names were too similar.   Whatever the case, this combination of nuts, nougat, caramel and chocolate is absolutely heavenly in my mind, making it tops on my list of best chocolate bars.
